Science Education and Communication - Rijksuniversiteit Groningen

Do you want to communicate scientific developments to the general public or engage different audiences with science? Or do you want to be a first-grade teacher in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology or computing science? Then, this programme might be for you!

What to expect from the Master's programme Science Education and Communication:

✔ Explore how science is taught, communicated, and understood across different settings
✔ Produce science communication products and design science education strategies
✔ Choose from two tracks: Education track (only Dutch) with teacher qualifications or Communication track (Dutch and/or English)

In the Communication track you will gain an understanding of science and the scientific process and develop the skills needed to succeed in diverse workplaces such as science museums and science centres, media, governmental and nongovernmental organisations and research institutes. The programme equips you to critically analyse how science and society interact, using theories from history, philosophy, communication and the social sciences. You will learn to form an informed and independent perspective on developments in science, technology, and their impact on society. You will develop your communication skills working on real-life assignments supervised by commissioners and expert guest lecturers from the field.

The Communication track is partly bilingual: the course units are taught in English, but you can choose to do your assignments in Dutch or English for some courses.

The Education track prepares you to become a first-grade teacher in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, or computing science. In this track you combine coursework at the teacher training programme, in which you build your didactical knowledge and skills, with internships at a high school. You will therefore immediately put what you learned into practice.

You will in addition do courses to build your communication skills and design science education products, such as lesson plans or science games or exhibitions. You can choose to do a research project in science education, for example at a high school.
