Resilient Farming and Food Systems - Wageningen University

Food production is under pressure worldwide. Climate change, soil degradation, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, volatile markets, and geopolitical shocks are testing the limits of today’s farming and food systems. At the same time, society expects healthy diets, fair livelihoods for farmers, and a lighter environmental footprint. This Master’s explores how we can redesign farming and food systems to be resilient, sustainable, and future-proof. Are you ready to help build food systems that can withstand shocks and still deliver for people and planet?

What will you study during this Master’s?
During this Master’s programme you will gain in-depth knowledge of farming and food systems and how they respond to disturbance, change, and uncertainty. Resilient Farming and Food Systems focuses on understanding the full chain, from soil and crops to supply networks, policy, and consumer demand, so you can strengthen resilience at multiple levels.

You will learn how to analyse vulnerabilities and trade-offs, and how to design strategies that improve sustainability, robustness, adaptability, and transformation capacity. This includes working with systems thinking, scenario analysis, and cross-disciplinary approaches that connect ecology, agronomy, economics, governance, and social sciences.

Do you want to develop solutions that balance productivity, environmental quality, animal and plant health, farmer income, and societal values? You will build the skills to evaluate interventions such as agroecological practices, circularity, climate-smart agriculture, diversified farming systems, and innovations in food chains and policy. You will also develop strong competencies in stakeholder engagement and communication, so your ideas can move from theory to practice. After following this programme you can conduct independent research and contribute to innovative approaches that strengthen resilience across farming and food systems.

Why this programme?

  • Systems perspective: You learn to connect farm-level processes with food chains, policy, markets, and consumer behaviour to understand where resilience is gained or lost.
  • Solution-oriented learning: Through case studies, field-based experiences, and research projects you develop practical skills to design and evaluate real-world interventions.
  • Cross-disciplinary toolbox: You combine ecological, technological, economic, and social approaches to tackle complex challenges like climate adaptation, soil and water management, and sustainable transitions.
  • Strong career perspectives: Wageningen University & Research is internationally recognised in agriculture and sustainability, offering excellent opportunities in consultancy, NGOs, government, agri-food companies, entrepreneurship, and research.
